Gisteravond naar de film Bella Bettien gekeken. U weet wel: die Haarlemse vrouw die zich had opgewerkt in de internationale drugshandel.
Mooie film, geen poespas of interpretaties, gewoon chronologisch van A naar B.

Aan het eind werd door een tekstje op de aftiteling bekend gemaakt dat Bettien Martens niet meer bestaat. Ze heeft een andere identiteit gekregen.
Niemand heeft ooit meer iets van haar gehoord, niemand weet waar ze verblijft. Ze heeft geen contact meer met familie of vrienden.

Dat laatste zinnetje suddert nou al de hele dag door m'n hoofd.
Ergens woont dus een vrouw die ooit Bettien Martens heette en die al een half leven heeft geleefd. Misschien heet ze nu Mary O'Neill en leeft ze in Canada. Of heet ze Sandrine Lefevre en woont ze, getrouwd en wel, in Frankrijk. Is ze getrouwd met een man waartegen ze nooit kan vertellen waar ze echt vandaan komt. Moet ze het de rest van haar leven met een nep-geschiedenis doen. Waarschijnlijk weet ze niet eens of haar moeder nog leeft.

Dat idee en hoe dat moet zijn, dat laat me niet los. Dat iemand gewoon weg is. Niet dood, niet vermist maar iemand anders.
Het is spijtig dat we daar nooit iets over kunnen lezen. Dat degene met de nieuwe identiteit daar niets over mag vertellen of opschrijven. Want ik heb wel wat te vragen.

Hoe gaat dat in je hoofd? Is dat een rol die je zo lang speelt totdat je er zelf in gelooft?
En wie verzint die nieuwe levensloop eigenlijk? En heb je daar ook invloed op? Mag je zeggen:"nee, ik wil liever maar 1 broer en geen 2." Heb je uberhaupt zelf iets te willen? En hoe oefen je dat nieuwe leven met die onbekende geschiedenis? En maak je wel eens fouten? En hoe doe je dat: geen contact meer opnemen met dierbaren uit dat vorige leven, terwijl je ze gewoon kunt bellen?

Afijn. Zo loop ik me dat dus af te vragen.
