Yvonne Habets vertrekt hoogstwaarschijnlijk bij de TROS. Habets werkte in allerlei landen onder allerlei omstandigheden. De laatste jaren maakte ze, met eigen camera en regie, kleine portretten van emigranten. Natuurlijk ook van de Nederlanders die naar Nieuw-Zeeland vertrokken om daar een nieuw bestaan op te bouwen.
In een van die afleveringen zat een fragment van een oudere man. Had het 'gemaakt' in NZ, kreeg er kinderen en kleinkinderen die het er goed hadden. Hij en zijn vrouw hadden een fijn huis en hun leven kabbelde vriendelijk verder.
Aan het eind van het fragment begon de man ineens hartverscheurend te huilen.
Wat bleek: hij wilde sterven in Nederland, zijn geboorteland. Hij wilde naar huis. Maar dat was onmogelijk. Zijn vrouw wilde blijven en zijn kinderen waren Nieuw-Zeelanders geworden.
Het hele fragment duurde misschien 2 minuten. Maar het drukte zo schrijnend duidelijk uit wat emigratie met je kan doen.
Het was erg prettig dat mevrouw Habets daar toen niet door- en overheen heeft gekwebbeld maar het gewoon kon laten. Zouden meer interviewers moeten proberen.
