AUCKLAND - de Amerikaanse vice-president Dan Quayle zou in 1980 bij Australie hebben aangedrongen op de liquidatie van de regeringsleider van Nieuw-Zeeland, David Lange. Oud-premier Lange vertelde dinsdag op de Nieuw-Zeelandse televisie dat Quayle van hem afwilde vanwege zijn antinucleaire wetgeving. Zo mochten Amerikaanse atoomonderzeeers geen Nieuw-Zeelandse havens meer aandoen.
De betrouwbaarheid van dit verhaal staat niet vast. De 59-jarige Australische oud-premier heeft wel vaker oncontroleerbare geschiedenissen opgedist.

Amerika geeft iemand in Australie opdracht om iemand in Nieuw-Zeeland te vermoorden. Het zogenaamde 'slachtoffer', David Lange vertelt dit op de NZ-se televisie. Maar wie is er nou onbetrouwbaar? De Australische oud-premier (die verder niet in het verhaal voorkomt) of David Lange die wellicht aan het Tara Singh Varma-syndroom lijdt.
