Tram 24, halte Muntplein. Overvolle tram, ik sta achterin in de ruimte die volgens mij balkon heet. Voor me rijtjes stoeltjes achter elkaar, allemaal bezet. Aan een van de bijbehorende palen hangt een oude man, duidelijk slecht ter been, heen en weer te zwaaien. Hij houdt de ijzeren paal stevig vast. Op het stoeltje onder hem zit een Surinaamse jongen, begin twintig, Kappa-petje op. De draadjes van zijn Mp3-speler hangen uit z'n oren. Hij wipt met z'n been mee met de muziek op z'n hoofd.
De jongen krijgt de oude zwaaiende man in de gaten en staat op. Hij gebaart dat de oude man op zijn plaats kan gaan zitten. De oude man zegt zachtjes dat hij niet hoeft te zitten, omdat hij dan daarna niet meer overeind komt. Hij heeft slechte knieën en die kunnen beter rechtop blijven staan. De jongen verstaat dit alles niet goed vanwege de muziek op z'n oren en zegt hard dat de man mag gaan zitten. Ze staan nu allebei tegenover elkaar te gebaren en te roepen en het betreffende stoeltje blijft ondertussen leeg.

Terwijl de twee iets aan elkaar duidelijk proberen te maken, glipt een man met duur suede jasje, ribfluwelen broek en gaatjesschoenen, type Concertgebouwbuurt en dan het vervelende soort, op het stoeltje. Hij is aan het bellen en bralt er stevig op los. De Surinaamse jongen en de oude man kijken verschrikt op van zoveel hanengedrag. Een enorme zinloos geweld-aanval golft door me heen. Ik haat mensen die zich zo vanzelfsprekend de halve wereld toeëigenen. Op basis van wát in godsnaam?
