Gisteren reden wij tegen zonsondergang weer eens terug uit het Land van Maas en Waal naar Amsterdam. De hele zomer hebben we luchtballonnen gezien. Gisteren waren het er maar liefst 7. De allermooiste had regenboogkleuren en was idioot dichtbij.
Ik hou ontzettend van luchtballonnen. Ik wil ook erg graag in zo'n mandje. Maar dat durf ik natuurlijk weer niet. Hoe geruststellend en informatief om het volgende te lezen:
- Is ballonvaren gevaarlijk?
Ballonvaren is niet gevaarlijk. Ongelukken komen heel zelden voor. De eisen die gesteld worden aan mensen en materiaal zijn bijzonder streng. Al het ballonmateriaal wordt jaarlijks gekeurd.
Voor de vaart wordt er contact opgenomen met de meteo om te zien of het vaarbaar weer is.
- Is het koud boven?
Boven is het niet kouder dan beneden. Dit komt doordat de ballon even snel gaat als de wind: in de mand zelf is het dus windstil.
- Waarom ziet men enkel 's morgens vroeg of 's avonds laat ballonnen?
Dit komt omdat er in de zomerperiode overdag thermiek is.
Thermiek bestaat uit opstijgende warme lucht die 2 uur na zonsopgang ontstaat en 2 uur voor zonsondergang weer verdwijnt. Thermiek is voor een ballon zeer gevaarlijk terwijl zweefvliegers dit net nodig hebben.
En de belangrijkste:
- Heeft u last van hoogtevrees in een ballon?
Nee, na het opstijgen heeft de ballon geen contact meer met de aarde en daardoor heeft u geen last van hoogtevrees.

Ik heb erge last van hoogtevrees, ben ooit een ballon ingestuurd en superenthousiast naar benee gekomen. Vraag me alles wat je wilt weten maar het is in elk geval geweldig. Klimmen in een klimtoren was een stuk enger...
