Toen ik het liedje voor het eerst hoorde dacht ik, Hela! Bruce Hornsby is weer aktief! Maar dat liedje dat overal uit iedere radio klinkt is niet van Bruce maar van Vanessa Carlton.
Ik had nog nooit van Vanessa Carlton gehoord maar "a thousand miles" is een vrolijk liedje met prettig Bruce Hornsby-achtig gepingel. Het schijnt dat Vanessa vergeleken wordt met Tori Amos. Maar dat vind ik dan weer nonsens want waar Tori sneert en ramt, is Vanessa een zangeres met een pruillipje. Dat pruillipje hoor je in "a thousand miles" niet zo maar zet maar eens een ander nummer van de dame op en je hoort het direkt: daar is er weer zo een met een kinderstemmetje. Ik weet niet wat er aan de hand is met de zangeressen uit het zachtere genre maar het valt mij in elk geval nogal op dat er bijna nergens met een 'normale' stem gezongen wordt. Ik bedoel hiermee niet de gewone lichte vrouwenstem maar dat extraatje, dat gejammer, die pruillip. Ik weet niet goed hoe ik het verschil moet beschrijven maar bijvoorbeeld: Dido heeft het niet, Heather Nova weer wel. Suzanne Vega heeft het niet maar Vanessa Carlton heeft er wel 1. Iets klagerigs en zeurderigs.
Dat is nogal jammer want over het algemeen is de tekst en muziek goed te pruimen. Daar hoeft helemaal geen extra dramatisch gedoe in gelegd te worden. Zing maar gewoon, dan zing je goed genoeg.
Maar ondertussen weet ik nog steeds niet wat Bruce Hornsby tegenwoordig uitvoert. Ik heb nog ergens een bandje van Bruce Hornsby and the Range. Je moet het niet in zijn geheel achter elkaar horen want een overdosis gepingel is ook niet gezond maar ik zong wel mee met:
